Fast Facts
On January 31st 2006, President Bush in his State of the Union Address
stated: "With a new national commitment ...the first car driven by a child
born today could be powered by hydrogen, and pollution-free. Join me in this
important innovation to make our air significantly cleaner, and our country
much less dependent on foreign sources of energy."
The President's Hydrogen Fuel Initiative pledges $1.2 billion
over five years for the research, development, and demonstration of hydrogen
and fuel cell technologies. The work is being carried out in partnership with
the private sector and under the leadership of the Department of Energy.
The goal is to make cost-effective fuel-cell vehicles widely
available in auto showrooms by 2020.
1/2 pound of hydrogen = approximately 1 gallon of gasoline in energy
value.
Hydrogen fuel cells are essentially batteries that generate electricity
by converting hydrogen and oxygen into water, producing no pollution.
